Rushing toward the Unworkable, cont'd There is an approach which has been proven to work. That approach is to have fewer government programs and controls. Whether you are Democrat or Republican, you cannot find a better more effective system than the free enterprise system. It is not perfect, and some means has to be derived to help those who are truly needy. Most of those needs can be filled better through private charity than through government programs. Government programs should be used only as a last resort. Many years ago I was a liberal who truly believed that government programs and mandates would provide a better life for all, especially those who might have destructive life styles. I learned over time that people actually do better the more they control their own lives. I may not agree with some of their decisions, but they probably do not agree with some of mine. What we do have with fewer controls and more freedom is greater self assurance and personal happiness. We also encourage independence and ingenuity which is what has led to the many advances which have been made in the last couple of centuries. It is no accident that most modern advances were founded in or at least had their roots in the United States. One of the outcomes of greater government controls and programs is more government dependence. Another outcome is an ever greater bureaucracy. Both of these outcomes in fact contribute to the number of people who are likely to continue to seek ever expanding government and, thus, to support liberal candidates. Thus, the people who really profit most from these programs are the liberals who are elected and stay in power. These same people usually exempt themselves from the same programs they force upon us. Ask a liberal why he or she believes that a bureaucrat in Washington who knows nothing of the liberal's situation can make better decisions about the liberal's life style and medical treatment and needs. If the person is honest, the answer will be that the bureaucrat cannot do better. But that answer is only for the liberal and not for the others whom the liberal claims to be helping. Modern liberalism is based upon a very arrogant view of the ability of the liberal and the inability of others. I know because I once believed such things. |
